Elon Musk’s recently introduced AI image generator, known as “Grok,” developed by xAI, has ignited significant controversy due to its production of inappropriate content. Available to subscribers of the Premium and Premium+ tiers on the platform X, formerly referred to as Twitter, Grok was intended to incorporate measures designed to prevent the creation of objectionable images. However, reports indicate that these safeguards are either ineffective or easily circumvented, resulting in Grok occasionally generating socially unacceptable content, in stark contrast to its competitors such as Midjourney and Dall-E.
Numerous instances have arisen where users have employed Grok to create images depicting celebrities in compromising situations, utilizing copyrighted characters, and illustrating violent scenarios. Such outcomes have prompted widespread concerns regarding the potential dissemination of harmful content, especially with the upcoming United States elections looming on the horizon. This issue has been notably discussed across various platforms, including Reddit, amplifying the public’s apprehensions.
Elon Musk, recognized for his aversion to perceived restrictions and his advocacy against censorship, has yet to issue any official statements addressing this matter. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that, beginning on August 16, Grok has exhibited heightened restrictions pertaining to the generation of provocative or harmful imagery. While an official confirmation from Mr. Musk or xAI has not been publicly provided, it appears that the entrepreneur may have conceded to increasing public pressure regarding the responsible use of AI technology.
