The Mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes, Mr. John Cruikshank, has reached out to the renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk, seeking assistance for residents facing interruptions to their gas and electricity services due to an ongoing landslide crisis. In a letter dated August 8, which was subsequently shared on the social media platform X—owned by Mr. Musk—Mayor Cruikshank highlighted this precarious situation and proposed a collaboration to implement sustainable energy solutions, specifically by equipping local homes with Tesla’s advanced solar panels and Powerwall batteries.
The coastal community of Rancho Palos Verdes has battled a gradual yet persistent landslide for several decades. However, the unprecedented rainstorms of 2023-2024 have dramatically accelerated the movement of the land, leading to alarming shifts of up to one foot per week. This has resulted in significant structural damage, including cracked walls, displaced roofs, ruptured underground pipes, and extensive fissures in the ground. Consequently, the city has been under a declared local state of emergency since October of last year.
On July 29, the Southern California Gas Company unexpectedly shut off gas service to 135 homes in the area, citing safety concerns. Following this, Southern California Edison informed over 500 households that they might soon face power outages as well. Such power cuts would exacerbate the existing public safety challenges, as electricity is essential for communication systems, sewage management, and the operation of groundwater pumps that mitigate further land movement.
While some residents have evacuated, many others remain, grappling with the challenges of daily life without access to natural gas as they prepare for an impending rainy season. Mayor Cruikshank has extended an invitation to Mr. Musk to visit the affected areas to witness the situation firsthand. He posits that a partnership with the community could highlight the effectiveness of clean energy technologies in responding to real-world crises, thereby reinforcing Tesla’s position as a leader in the green energy sector.
In tandem with this outreach to Mr. Musk, Mayor Cruikshank has also submitted a request for state and federal aid to fund further repairs necessitated by the landslide conditions. It is important to note that damages from landslides typically do not qualify for assistance under the California Disaster Assistance Act nor are they generally covered by standard homeowners insurance.
This urgent appeal illustrates not only the immediate need for practical solutions but also underscores the potential for innovative partnerships that leverage cutting-edge technology to address pressing environmental challenges in the community.
