Elon Musk’s ambitious project—a 24-hour diner and drive-in theater—is presently under construction in Los Angeles, reflecting a fusion of modern dining and entertainment with electric vehicle infrastructure. This innovative establishment, which broke ground in September 2023, signifies Tesla’s commitment to enhancing the electric vehicle charging experience by integrating it with leisure and culinary offerings.
Recent photographs from the construction site illustrate the evolving landscape of the Hollywood venue, which is designed as a two-story building featuring an eye-catching metallic facade. Notably, Alex Ingram, a former chief designer at Tesla, has shared insights and footage from the development process, underscoring the project’s significance within Tesla’s broader vision.
Current reports indicate that the Tesla diner and drive-in will function as a Supercharging station, equipped with 28 charging stalls alongside two large movie screens capable of accommodating over 200 patrons. These screens are planned to feature short films, ranging from 15 to 30 minutes, aligning with typical charging times for Tesla vehicles. Guests will have the unique opportunity to enjoy these screenings either from the rooftop seating area or from within their parked Teslas.
When initially announced in 2018, Musk characterized the concept as reminiscent of an “old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant,” demonstrating his intent to blend nostalgia with cutting-edge technology. The establishment garnered further traction in 2021 when Tesla sought trademark approval for restaurant services and subsequently submitted detailed plans for the diner in Los Angeles in 2022.
In a statement made in August 2023, Musk reiterated his enthusiasm for the venue, comparing it to a blend of “Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharging.” This foray into the diner and drive-in sector places Musk amidst a growing trend of immersive consumer experiences, a market increasingly appealing to individuals seeking social interactions post-pandemic.
Tesla is poised to venture into a competitive arena dominated by entertainment giants and other innovative entities, such as Netflix, which is launching immersive venues to engage audiences. Current Tesla charging stations feature basic amenities, yet the Hollywood diner promises to redefine the electric vehicle charging experience as a desirable destination in its own right.
As of the latest updates, Tesla representatives have not issued a formal comment regarding the project, but the growing interest and media coverage continue to capture public attention, placing this unique establishment on the radar of both automotive enthusiasts and entertainment aficionados alike.
